Use ACENTAUR Net with Tailscale (free tier)

ACENTAUR Net normally finds a Render Server automatically on the same local network. Tailscale can privately connect the DAW Mac and Render Server when they are in different locations. Tailscale is a separate service and must be installed and configured independently from ACENTAUR.

What you need:

- ACENTAUR installed and licensed on both Macs
- Tailscale installed and running on both Macs
- Both Macs visible to each other through Tailscale

Setup

1. Download Tailscale for macOS and install it on both Macs:
https://tailscale.com/download/mac

2. Sign in on both Macs and connect them to the same Tailnet. Follow Tailscale's macOS installation guide: (https://tailscale.com/docs/install/mac) if needed.

3. Confirm that both Macs are online and can reach each other. Tailscale explains this in this document: https://tailscale.com/kb/1452/connect-to-devices

4. On the Render Server, open ACENTAUR Settings, enable 'Use this Mac as ACENTAUR Net Render Server', and select 'Tailscale'.

5. Open ACENTAUR in the DAW on the other Mac. When 'ACENTAUR Net ready' appears, activate it and generate as usual.

 

Using Macs owned by different people

If the Macs do not use the same Tailscale account, the owner of the Render Server can share that Mac with the other user. See Tailscale's guide to sharing machines here: https://tailscale.com/kb/1084/sharing

If the Render Server does not appear:

- Confirm that Tailscale shows both Macs as online.
- Confirm that ACENTAUR is licensed on both Macs.
- Confirm that the Render Server option is enabled and set to 'Tailscale'.
- Make sure no other Mac is currently using that Render Server. ACENTAUR Net accepts one active client at a time; the first connection wins.
- Reopen ACENTAUR after the Tailscale connection is available.
